They are Medium-sized birds with reddish-brown feathers and white underfeathers. Excellent layers, producing around 300-350 Light to medium brown eggs per year. What is a 'mature' hen?Our 'mature' hens have been laying eggs for 12 months as part of pasture raised poultry farm flocks in South Australia. They are already producing eggs regularly and being looked after to a high standard. The benefit of a mature hen is that they will provide immediate egg production, though they may have passed their peak production phase in a commercial setting, they can continue to lay for years. The egg quality, such as shell strength might diminish slightly as they age. However, with a maintenance diet that support consistent egg production and overall health this would not be a problem for your family flock. Mature hens are an affordable high yield chicken.

What is a pullet?Pullets: are young hens, typically around 16–20 weeks old, just entering their laying cycle. As they mature, pullets will reach a high level of egg production, making them a strong long-term investment. However, expect a short initial period with fewer eggs as they settle into laying. Feed and nutrition - Their nutritional needs focus on growth and development initially, with a transition to a laying diet once they mature. They require a carefully managed diet to reach full laying potential. Their care routines may differ slightly from those of mature birds but if you purchase a custom laying mix like the one we supply here at Cluck and Go you will be ensuring long term health and egg yield. Cost - It may be more expensive upfront, but as they haven’t reached their full production potential yet they offer many years of egg laying ahead.

How much coop space do I need for my chickens?Provide a well-ventilated, predator-proof coop at 2-3 square feet per bird. Factors that affect space needs: Temperature, Humidity, Ventilation, Air quality. Local guidelines: Always check local council rules to make sure you're providing adequate space for your flock.
-
How do I settle my hens into a new environment?Your new chicken will be unfamiliar with their new environment and may need guidance to establish a new routine. Keep new chickens confined to the coop for 1-2 days. This helps them recognize the coop as their home base. After this period, they are more likely to return on their own at night. Establish a consistent routine by using specific sounds, such as a call or whistle, combined with feeding or treats. Chickens can learn to respond to these cues and return to the coop.
